Play Therapy

What is Play Therapy?

Play therapy is a form of psychotherapy that utilises play as the medium to build a relationship and communicate with children in their natural language, which is play.

In the therapy room, I have an array of toys and art materials that your child can use. These include sand trays, dress-up items, board games, musical instruments, and books.

What can I expect?

12 sessions are considered a short-term intervention. For some children, this is enough; however, where problems have persisted for a long time, more sessions are sometimes needed.

Sessions are held at the same time every week and last 45 minutes.

Siblings are seen individually to provide each child with their own one-to-one time and therapeutic relationship.

Each Play Therapy session costs £85.

If reports are needed for court, this is a further £85.

When is Kinder Therapy open?

Kinder Therapy is open 6 days a week, Monday to Saturday. Session times range from 8 am - 6 pm.

Play therapy often takes place during school time. Similar to any medical appointment, schools are usually supportive of therapy appointments. Letters can be written to schools, and it does not affect you child’s attendance record.

Who is suitable for Play Therapy?

Any child or young person who has experienced abuse, trauma, violence, neglect, loss, and many more emotional or behavioural difficulties will benefit from therapy.

I work with children and young people from the age of 5 to 18.

With teenagers and young adults preferring to talk in therapy. See more about my experience in the About Me section.

Confidentiality and communication

It is important for a child to know that the play therapy room is a private space for them to play and say whatever they want. Children are told that as their therapist, I won’t tell anyone what they play or say without their permission - unless I am worried that they or someone else is being harmed.

Play Therapy is most effective when I share some of what I understand about your child with you, and if you are willing to perhaps make changes in your approach to your child as well. On this basis, I will have regular review sessions with you in which (with your child’s agreement) we discuss the themes of play and ideas about your child's difficulties.
